Where Do I Start?

We have created the following Training Path Chart to guide you through the process of selecting a course. As you will see, Roco offers two primary paths – (1) Certification and (2) Non-Certification. Both certification and non-certification programs provide extensive hands-on experience, and both include rescue training and practice in various Confined Space Types as referenced in OSHA 1910.146 Permit Required Confined Spaces.

STEP 1…

Do I need Roco’s certification based on NFPA 1006 Technical Rescue Professional Qualifications?

In addition to meeting the Job Performance Requirements (JPRs) of NFPA 1006, this certification testing by Roco serves to document proficiency in individual rescue skills as required by OSHA 1910.146. The program also meets the minimum annual requirements for Confined Space Types practice in various confined space types as required by 1910.146. (Refer to Roco Types Chart & Compliance Guide)

Our certification programs include performance skills testing and written exam based on the skills requirement (JPRs) of NFPA 1006. To achieve Roco Rescue Technician, a passing score is required for both the skills testing and the written exam. Roco Rescue Technician certification is valid for two years.

STEP 2…

Which Rescue Technician Certification program do I need?

Roco offers two certification programs based on the rescue disciplines of NFPA 1006:
(1) Confined Space Rescue Technician and (2) Rope Rescue Technician.

The majority of our customers begin with Roco Confined Space Rescue Technician certification, which includes the skills to perform confined space and high angle rope rescue operations. They later complete the Roco Rope Rescue Technician certification, which incorporates additional skills such as rope ascension (climbing); knot-passing; and high-line systems, to name a few. Refer to Roco’s Comparison Checklist below.

STEP 3…

What are my time constraints for completing the training or certification?

A Roco Fast-Track™ course is the quickest way to achieve Roco Rescue Technician certification. As you will see from our Training Path Chart, we offer two Fast-Track™ options – (1) Fast-Track 70™ Confined Space Rescue Technician, and (2) Fast-Track 110™ Rope and Confined Space Rescue Technician.

  • Fast-Track 70™ Confined Space Rescue Technician combines two Roco courses into one fast-track option, which can be completed in only 70 hours. The two courses that are combined are Roco’s Rescue Essentials and Confined Space Rescue Technician (combined total of 90 hours).
  • Fast-Track 110™ Rope and Confined Space Rescue Technician combines three Roco courses into one fast-track option, which can be completed in 110 hours. The three courses include Roco’s Rescue Essentials, Confined Space Rescue Technician and Rope Rescue Technician (combined total of 130 hours).

More Questions…

What is the basis for Roco’s Rescue Technician certification?

Roco’s certification is based on national consensus standards (NFPA 1006) while also meeting the minimum practice requirements of OSHA 1910.146 Permit Required Confined Spaces. It can also be used to document individual skills proficiency as required by 1910.146. Students are taught safe and effective technical rope rescue skills, which includes hands-on practice and numerous problem-solving rescue scenarios. Roco’s skills testing process is rigorous — using a minimum of five (5) testing stations to evaluate each participant. These test stations include Rescue Knots; Load-Sharing Anchor Rigging; Belay Systems; Patient Packaging (4 stations); and Mechanical Advantage.

Roco’s Rescue Technician certification is a great way to establish a baseline for your team members while correlating to a national consensus standard. In addition, the third-party testing verifies and documents that your team standards are being met. This process also points out any weak areas that may need additional training or practice. You can be sure that your team members are prepared to operate safely and proficiently during rescue emergencies.

What’s the next step after Roco certification?

Rescue skills are extremely perishable and require regular practice to stay proficient. Additionally, annual practice (minimally) is required for each team member by OSHA 1910.146 Permit Required Confined Spaces regulation in the types of spaces from which rescue may be required. Roco certifications are valid for two years.

Options for maintaining rescue proficiency include:

  • Advanced Team Operations, which includes extensive practice in varying confined space and high angle problem-solving scenarios. This is a more advanced program with more complex scenarios.
  • Annual Compliance Refresher is available for meeting annual practice requirements. These sessions also update students on the latest rescue techniques and equipment.
  • Custom Programs from Roco is an excellent way to train your team in the skills and techniques based on your site-specific needs.

Options for your rescue team include:

  • Team Performance Evaluation (TPE) – your team’s performance capabilities are evaluated by completing a number of different scenarios, which are graded and debriefed by Roco instructors. Customers receive a Rescue Team Capabilities Report following the class.
  • Roco Rescue Challenge – if your team is really up for a challenge, you can attend Roco’s Annual Rescue Challenge along with other rescue teams from across the nation. It provides a great capabilities test while learning and practicing in all six confined space types.

Rescue Technician Recertification is required every other year to maintain Roco certification. Recertification programs include one day of practice and review followed by documented skills performance testing and written exam.

This training cycle can be repeated as needed – giving you the assurance that you and your team members have practiced their rescue skills annually as per required regulations and have been tested accordingly.
